American Pharoah wins the Preakness!

preak-wordpressThis means he will have the chance to become the 12th Triple Crown winner ever on June 6 at Belmont Park when he will try to win the Belmont Stakes.  There have been several over the last 18 years who have tried to do this and failed.  The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978 so it has been quite a while.

Today was the not so fun part of photographing horse racing, dealing with rain.  It was fine all day until time for the post parade for the Preakness when it started storming like crazy, dumping rain by the bucketful.  The show must go on, so the photographers put on their rain gear and deal as best they can with the conditions, just like the horses run their race regardless of the weather.  American Pharoah apparently loves mud because he went to the front and never looked back, winning by 7 lengths.  Here you see his jockey and handlers drenched but happy after the race.
